Why learn Calculus and Inorganic Chemistry?

Why learn calculus, trigonometry, ionic reactions and inorganic chemistry? So you can understand and converse with your son’s science teacher at a Parent-teacher interview.  And show how much you remembered from your own schooling.

Apart from that, I am at a loss to understand why I learnt all this stuff.
