Microsoft adds more back to the community than other companies I’ve worked for. In 500 years time, people will remember Bill’s philanthropy work before they think of the software company, and the impact on technology. This is in a similar way as the Medici in Florence.

I’d respect him more if he did it quietly. The “Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation” has a little too much bling to it.
But if a philanthropist donates money and noone sees, is it philanthropy?
There is a long heritage of people donating money and having their names attached — so they can have their names remembered positively by history. Rockefeller, for instance.
Posterity is a small price to pay for these donations.
