UK Earthquake: Facebook and Twitter broke quake news
I am quoted in a UK article Facebook and Twitter broke quake news in Metro.co.uk
My statement on twitter ‘one day, on the BBC: “reports from twitter are stating an earthquake…” one day’
Barcamp Melbourne 2008
On Saturday I flew to Melbourne to attend Barcamp.
Very different to the Sydney Barcamp: more FOSS people, more code.
Managed to score a 5 minute slot near the end of the day. After a long day of PHP, eee PCs, Open XML and other depthful things – and being the last official presenter before beer-o-clock (kindly sponsored by Microsoft) there was a distinct lack of lulz. Time for – LOLCODE!
When asked if the next revision of Windows is based on LOLCODE, I had to sadly admit the answer is no. However, future Windows: who knows?
A Journey That Began 10 Years ago…

Wow. August 1998 I began work at Adobe. One of the things that was talked about was “K2” – a product that eventually became InDesign.
Don’t know how I feel about Quark changing tack. It is interesting how the world turns.
Thanks for the link, Andrew.
Help Dataportability.org Design a New Logo
Chris Saad, as mentioned in yesterday’s post, needs a new logo.
The sad irony
The day the Microsoft announces this, RedHat goes and does this.
Has the world turned upside down?
Good news and Bad news Chris. You are on the radar screen.
Now, LOLZ aside: Working for Microsoft
After this excellent and funny video, many former work mates ask me what its like to work for Microsoft. The chutzpah to take time to make a video like this is in itself a testament to the cultural state of Microsoft. Well, some parts at least.
Rory Blyth, formerly of the Channel 9 team, writes what it’s like working for Jeff Sandquist.
Sadly, I don’t work directly for Jeff, but do contribute to some of his sites. Rory is 100% correct about this particular part of Microsoft. It is worth a read for those managers thinking about approaching this blogging/web 2 world. The stress of becoming more corporately transparent is going to be felt by the management level.
Dunno how Jeff does it.

Aeoth: Sub AU$670 Media Centre
Paul Jenkins proves that you can make a 1080p Vista Media Center for under AU$670. That’s a spectacular achievement.
Well done, dude!
